    Cameroon journalist Mimi Mefo in detention at New Bell prison

    Award winning Anglophone Journalist Mimi Mefo Takambou, has been detained at the New Bell central prison in Douala, a statement on her Facebook page confirms.


    Mimi Mefo was remanded in custody on Thursday, after answering present to an invitation for questioning from the Gendarmerie in Bonanjo Douala, on issues relating to the publication of “false information” on the on-going Anglophone crisis and other political matters in Cameroon.

    Her detention has sparked mixed feelings amongst Cameroon politicians and Journalist, who consider it a complete violation of press freedom in the country.

    “Our very own Mimi Mefo has been taken to New bell Prison in handcuffs. Her crime? “Les ordres viennent de Yde.” Auditioned for all of 10 mins between 14h-21h. Her case moved from the Gendarmerie to Military Tribunal It was their intention all along to arrest her. #FreeMimiMefo,” Edit Kah Walla a prominent Cameroonian female politician posted on JUMPIC.

    Mimi Mefo is an Anglophone journalist and Editor in Chief of English Service at EQUINOXE Radio and Television, a local TV station in Cameroon.

    She also runs a private-news site, Mimimefoinfos.com.

    Mimi Mefo won the 2017 best female TV news presenter award organised by the initiators of the  la foundation Camerounaise des Consommateurs (FECACO).
    With over seven years of uninterrupted journalism practice to her credit, Mimi's love for political reporting, human interest and gender issues also earned her an award in 2016 for best investigative TV report. The competition was organised by AFRICAphonie in partnership with the British High Commission.
