    Petrolex & Tradex among 390 companies sanctioned for environmental pollution

    Cameroon’s Ministry of the Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) has slammed varying sanctions on some 390 enterprises found guilty of pollution and violation of environmental laws.

    Authorities of the Ministerial Department made public the list of sanctioned companies in Yaounde recently, and handed fines ranging from FCFA 1-50 million in accordance with the 1996 law on environmental management in Cameroon.

    Most of the enterprises found guilty of manufacturing, utilising or circulating non-biodegradable plastics comprised of: bakeries, pharmacies, shops and drycleaners.

    Douala-Based Societe Camerounaise de Transport et D’enterprise Maritime is the most hit in the sanctions with a fined FCFA 50million.

    In the hydrocarbons and public works sector, Petrolex, Green Oil, and Tradex are among companies hit with sanctions.

    The Cameroon Tea Estates was also found guilty of not conducting environmental impact assessments, EIAs before setting up structures.

    The naming and sanctioning of these enterprises shed a defining phase in Cameroon’s battle against the use of non-biodegradable plastics.
