"My dad and my last name are from Cameroon but I was born, raised, educated, taught Basketball in France... I am French"- Nicolas Batum

After France won the World Cup, several Cameroonians and other Africans have taken to social media to claim that Africa won the cup, not France, because of the predominance of Blacks originally from Africa in the French National team.

29 years old Basketballer; Nicolas Batum, who plays for the French National team, and in the NBA for the Charlotte Hornets, born and raised in France to a Cameroonian man and a French woman, took to his social media to air his views on the matter.

He mentioned that all those claiming that Africa won the world cup should get lost. He said France won the Cup and not Africa because the people who played for France are French. He used himself as an example.

He said his father was a Cameroonian, he traveled to France when he was 10 years old, France raised him and educated him. He eventually built his life there, got married to a white French woman and that was how he(Nicolas) was born.

His father died when he was 2 years old and he has ever since lived in France, was raised there, learnt how to play Basketball in France and has been playing for the French National Basketball team since he was 15 years old.

He said nonetheless, he has not forgotten his origin(Cameroon) as he has built maternities in the country and constructed education centers in other parts of Africa. His views met alot of controversy especially from his Cameroonian fans. See his posts below:
