Duala Chiefs call on President Paul Biya to contest for 2018 Presidential Elections!

At a press briefing on Monday afternoon, May 28, 2018, the journalists stormed the headquarters of the traditional Sawa people's assembly in the Akwa neighborhood, hoping to have Ngondo's official position on the issue which has been trending on social media; Destruction of the construction site of a statue in memory of the nationalist; UM Nyobe by the superior chief of Canton Bell and his subjects.

They blatantly ignored that subject and instead made a statement in which they condemned the recent declaration of the American Ambassador in Yaoundé. The latter suggested during a hearing at the Unity Palace that President Paul Biya should not run again in the next presidential election after 36 years in power.

The Sawa traditional authorities believe that the attitude of the US Ambassador is a "flagrant and pernicious manifestation of foreign interference in view of the upcoming presidential election" in Cameroon.

In addition, the Ngondo reiterates its call for a new candidacy of Paul Biya to succeed to himself. The Sawa Chiefs "urge Paul Biya, their adopted son, to courageously take the necessary actions to secure a triumphal and indisputable re-election at the next deadline," they said. See their statement below:

Nothing, not even a word on the subject that has been debated on for three days and deteriorates the policy of living together that is advocated by the government since the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis two years ago.

On Saturday, May 26th, the Canton Bell, member of the Ngondo, destroyed at the Centennial crossroads in the Koumassi district, a barracks to prevent the Douala Urban Community from erecting a monument in honor of Ruben Um Nyobe, originally from the Bassa ethnic group.

"The statue of UM Nyobe in the center of Njo-Njo is a provocation. We want to honor ours first. We have our Martyrs namely Rodolphe Douala Manga Bell, Ngosso Dinn" - said the Canton Bell chiefs.

This is destruction has caused a great uproar among the Cameroonian population as majority have denounced this act which favors the withdrawal of identity to the detriment of living together.
