International Civil Aviation Organization orders the shut down of the Douala International Airport!

Since last week, a team of inspectors from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have been auditing the facilities of the Douala International Airport, following complaints from some fifteen companies in the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) of Douala.

According to the first elements of this audit, ICAO recommends the closure of Douala International Airport. The organization mentions, among other reasons, the proximity of the houses in the airport area, the poor maintenance of computer equipment and runway equipment, but also the terminal which the companies say is in a deplorable state.

Indeed, in a letter dated February 5, 2018, members of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) Douala, the association of the 15 airlines (Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines, RAM, Ethiopian Airlines, Asky, Karinou Airlines, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, Trans Air Congo, Rwandair, Air Côte d'Ivoire, Cronos, Ceiba and even the Cameroonian company Camair-Co) serving the Douala International Airport told the airport officials about their "concern" about the overall condition of the infrastructure.

These companies protested against the poor maintenance of computer equipment and track equipment (trolleys, container ships, etc) and more.

"If we exclude some parts of the passenger path, the building is a repulsive dirt: old paintings, decrepit walls, substandard toilets, dirty or missing false ceilings, abandoned development works, tired frames, electrical connections or computer inconsistent with Unknown circuits ... "lamented the AOC.

After this pronouncement that was relayed by the press, the Minister of Transport brought together the various parties to consider solutions. At the end of the February 24, 2018 meeting in Douala, two weeks of work had been initiated. However, the government promised that other work requiring substantial resources would be made in the long term.

Recall that in 2016, the government of Cameroon had been granted a loan of 46 million euros (30 billion FCFA) from the French Development Agency (AFD) to renovate the Douala airport. The first part concerning the renovation of the track was conducted in March 2016.
