Over 50 teachers arrested in Yaoundé for protesting over unpaid salaries and better working conditions!

On Tuesday, over 300 teachers took to the streets of Yaoundé to march in protest of unpaid salaries for over 5 years.

Forces of law and order got to the scene and apprehended most of the teachers, about 56 of them.

Government officials later on called for the Teacher's trade union leaders to sit for a meeting to talk about their grievances.

The Teachers Trade union leaders boycotted the meeting and demanded for the immediate release of their colleagues thrown behind bars simply for protesting their unpaid salaries.

The deliberations ended in a deadlock.

The teachers have spent over 48 hours in detention already.

Akere Mina's Now Political party sent lawyers to the scene. The lawyers reported that they identified 56 of the said teachers, and they collected statements from 50 of them.

    See press statement below:

Other political parties including the CPP and PURS have spoken out on the matter, urging the police to immediately release the detained teachers.
