    Polls underway in Angola’s general elections

    Polls opened at 7am local time in Angola’s general elections and reports say voting started out slow.

    Few people turned up early Wednesday morning to cast their ballots for both the parliamentary and presidential slots.

    Six parties are vying to take over the seat of outgoing President Eduardo dos Santos. 

    The political parties include the ruling MPLA led by Joao Lourenco, the main opposition party UNITA led by Isaias Samakuva, FNLA led by Lucas Benghim Gonda, PRS led by Benedito Daniel, APN led by Quintino Antonio, and the coalition CASA-CE party led by Abel Epalanga Chivukuvuku.

    Election stats:
    About 9 million voters are eligible to cast ballots.
    There are 220 parliamentary seats up for grabs
    Six parties are involved in the process
    This is the fourth election since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992
    The ruling MPLA have won all the last three polls

    Main actors in Angola presidential election
    1. Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco of MPLA
    The 63-year-old has served as Angola’s Defense Minister since 2014. He is standing on the ticket of the ruling MPLA party.
    2. Isias Henrique Ngola Samakuva of UNITA
    Samakuva, 71, leads the main opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). He has been leader of the party since 2003 and participated in the 2008 and 2012 polls.
    3. Abel Epalanga Chivukuvuku of the CASA-CE
    The 60-year-old heads CASA CE – a party founded five years ago. CASA-CE is a breakaway from the main opposition UNITA.
    4. Lucas Benghim Gonda of FNLA
    Gonda will be leading the Natinal Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), a party whose electoral fortunes have been dwindling since 2008.
    5. Benedito Daniel of the PRS
    A teacher by training, Benedito is a parliamentarian on the ticket of the PRS – the Social Renewal Party. He was elected to lead the party in May this year to replace retired leader, Eduardo Kuangana.
    6. Quintino Antonio Moreira of the APN
    The 43-year-old is a professor at law. He leads the National Patriotic Alliance (APN). He is the youngest candidate leading the youngest party. The APN was founded barely 18 months ago.
