Biya takes giant step, orders release of Agbor Balla & Co plus Ayah Paul

The president of the Republic of Cameroon His Excellency Paul Biya has today 30 August 2017, ordered the discontinuance of proceedings, pending before the Yaounde Military tribunal against Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor-Balla, Dr Fontem Aforteka'a Neba, Justice Ayah Paul Abine, and other persons arrested in relation to the crisis that has plagued the North West and South West regions of Cameroon for close to a year.

The presidential decision is contained in a Press release made public this Wednesday, and signed by the Minister,Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.

According to the release, the decision is in line with numerous measures already taken by the government to address the concerns voiced by the people of the two regions, and stems from the president’s firm resolve to continuously explore ways and means of seeking a peaceful solution to crisis, through the virtues of tolerance, dialogue, and humanism.

The release also reaffirms the head of state’s determination to relentlessly combat all enemies of  peace and progress, champions of division, criminals of all kinds, who under the guise of political demands, attempt to jeopardise the future of the country, especially that of the youths, and warned that they will be brought before the court.

Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor-Balla was arrested on 17 January 2017, after organising peaceful protests to promote the rights of the English-speaking minority in Cameroon, and transported to Yaounde where he joined Dr Fontem Neba, Mancho Bibixy and some other 25 persons already arrested and detained at the Kondengui maximum security prison in Yaounde.

For over seven months they have been languishing in prison on charges of Terrorism, Rebellion against the state, and Incitement of civil unrest.

The trial of all the arrested was initially scheduled to begin on Wednesday 1 February, but was postponed to Monday 13 February and as continuously been held and adjoined till date, without any final judgement pass.

Their release is a giant step in the right direction, of what could go a long way to bring the desired positive end to months of civil unrest in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon, as the presidential decree ordering their release urged all Cameroonians to join forces to ensure that Cameroon remains a land of peace, stability, concord and progress.
