At least 13 people have been confirmed dead on Sunday following fierce confrontation between the military and unarmed pro-independence protesters in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon.

Soldiers in Cameroon shot dead independence protesters where rallies were held on the 56th anniversary of the incorporation of the regions into Cameroon.
In Kumba, chief town of Meme division two people were killed with several others wounded, before the Southern Cameroon flag was hoisted in Fiango.

The situation was far more horrible in Tombel, Kupe Muanenguba division, where four deaths were recorded and the legal department of the subdivision set ablaze.

Two police officers were amongst the three deaths reported in Ekiliwindi, where several others remain in critical conditions.

In Kumbo, the principal prison was set ablaze with three deaths recorded in the area.
The towns of Buea, Akwaya, and Ndop recorded at least one death, while four people suffer severe gunshot wounds in Bamenda.

More than 20 have been arrested in Wum, while the SDO’s car in Belo was burnt to ashes.

Demands for independence have grown in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon in recent years and tension was at its pick on Sunday's pro-independence protests.

English speakers accuse the Francophone majority of discrimination.

They are often excluded from top civil service jobs, and the French language and legal system have been imposed on them.

The government denies the allegations and insists that it treats all citizens equally.

The divisions in the central African state date back to the post-colonial settlement.

Cameroon was colonised by Germany and then split into British and French areas after World War One.

Following a referendum, British-run Southern Cameroons joined the French-speaking Republic of Cameroon in 1961.

It is now divided into the South-West and North-West regions.
