Unlicensed Clubs risk forfeiting South West amateur League

Lack of licences halt SW regional league

Remaining games of the 1st day of play in the 2016-2017 football season of the South West Region are due to take place from May 21, 2017. The decision was attained following a conclave held on Monday 15th May in Buea by some two executive committee members of the country's football governing body-FECAFOOT. Together with Senator Mbella Moki Charles and associate, local officials resolved to puncture a 7-week stalemate come what may.

Unseriousness, lack of licences and sluggishness have held the 26-club championship hostage after it was launched on 2nd April in the town of friendship, Limbe. Holders Victoria United FC humiliated newcomers Ajax Likomba 5-0, while Catholic University SA edged Maumu Youths FC 3-2 weeks later. Eleven games have not been played since April owing to the aforementioned constraints, particularly the acquisition of licences for players. The opening had even been delayed for weeks given that it happened on 13 March in 2016.

In response to the status quo, the Secretary General of the South West regional league, Mayebi John Namanga, on Tuesday May 16 said;

"We must admit that the championship has suffered delays. We have not been able to play because clubs lack licences and no club like I earlier said, will play without licences. You know old habits die hard".

According to Mr Mayebi, some clubs have failed to bring their documents even when his office has opened up for help in the e-licence production procedure. However, he noted that apart from Best Stars FC, Victoria United (Opopo), all of Limbe, Ajax Likomba of Tiko and CUSA, over 17 clubs have made significant strides recently, a move which guarantees action as from May 21, 2017, across stadia in the region. But the former winner of the Cameroon Premier League with Samba Boys (Tiko United) in 2009, was clear on the fact that no further leniency will be displayed though internet shutdown in the region understandably contributed massively.

It will appear that in as much as clubs are encouraged to be part, standards also have to be respected. Besides, the national office had understood with the clubs and extended licence acquisition deadline to May 12, which was still not met.

The head coach of Buea United, Njoku Barnabas, admitted the delay has dealt a blow to his club's training programme, which has unusually unfolded for 12 weeks. He who has yet to acquire licences for his team is worried what the performance would be, especially with complaints of psychological instability from team captain Mbelli, Noire also known as Messi. Notwithstanding, a couple of warm up matches played has defined their form as they look to receiving Continental SA on Sunday in a Buea derby.

After their demotion from MTN Elite 2, Dynamic FC will turn a new leaf when they clash with the Home Boys of Prisons on 22 May, while Njalla Quan SA fold their sleeves against Tiko United the day before.
