The 20th edition of the all-varsity games 2017 has come and gone, producing one of the most noticeable upset in the games history.

For the first time in recent years, the National Institute of Youths and Sports (INJS) have dropped to 2nd position in the games official rankings. The sports institution which acquire a total of 30 medals (13 gold, 14 silver, and 3 bronze) this year, were outshone by the university of Douala with 31 medals (14 gold, 12 silver, and 5 bronze).

The University of Yaounde 2 Soa ranks 3rd on the general classification with 34 medals (11 gold, 8 silver, 15 bronze), while their closest neighbours the University of Yaounde 1 one 4th place won a total of 36 medals, (10 gold,7 silver, and 19 bronze).

Host institution the university of Bamenda occupied 12th spot on the official rankings with 16 medals (6 silver and 10 bronze), while rock bottom institutions in this year’s all-varsity games include; ISTM, UCAC, and IUCSU, who all exited the competition without a single medal.

At the close of the 20th edition of the all-varsity games, another noticeable upset of the competition was at the level of population turnover.

According to many observers, this year’s games lacked the usual effervescence that has characterised the competition over the years, owing to the fact that the games held in the wake of a series of strike actions and “ghost towns” in the host city of Bamenda and the North West region in general.

While officiating over the closing ceremony on Saturday, the Minister of Higher Education Jacques Fame Ndongo, announced that the 21st edition of the games in 2018 will be hosted by the University of Maroua.
