Congolese health ministry has notified the WHO of a "lab-confirmed case" of Ebola, after at least one person died after contracting the virus in the country's north-east.

Following the report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing the outbreak as "a public health crisis of international importance".

The last outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo was in 2014 and killed more than 40 people.
This latest ‘outbreak’ comes three years (2014-2015), after the last outbreak of the disease which was the deadliest in history, killing over 11,000 people in West Africa, mostly in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Authorities in the DR Congo and WHO are now working on containing this new challenge.

Ebola is a viral illness of which the initial symptoms can include a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And that is just the beginning: subsequent stages are vomiting, diarrhoea and - in some cases - both internal and external bleeding.

The disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals, including chimpanzees, fruit bats and forest antelope.

It then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments. Even funerals of Ebola victims can be a risk, if mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased.
