Common Law Lawyers in Cameroon have resolved to head back to the court rooms on Tuesday, May 2, after at least six months of inactivity. The announcement is contained in a press release issued on 9 April by the Cameroon Bar President Barrister Jackson Ngnie Kamga.

The lawyers downed their wigs and gowns in October 2016, in protest against a series of grievances they had tabled before government.

The Bar president’s  release follows a series of extraordinary Bar Council meetings held respectively in Buea and Bamenda on Saturdays 18th and 25th March 2017, which were immediately followed by working sessions between lawyers of the two Anglophone regions and the Bar Council.

However may Cameroonians especially of English origin continue to wonder why the Common Law Lawyers will resolve to resume work on May 2nd when some of their colleagues and at least 25 others are still languishing in prison.

But the Bar President Barrister Jackson Ngnie Kamga said it would be difficult for him to just negotiate for the release of their colleagues, as they and some 25 others have all been charged under one single suit going by the Yaounde Military Tribunal’s ruling of April 7.

Barrister Agbor Balla, Dr. Fontem Neba, Mancho Bibixy and the 25 others are charged for among other crimes, terrorism, secession and destabilisation of public order; charges that carry very heavy jail sentence.
