President Paul Biya in August 1985

Today is Thursday, so let us throw back to some Cameroon history!
Just a little history for some Cameroonians who think The Anglophone Problem in Cameroon is new, no it is not.
At the end of this post is attached a letter written by the French Ambassador in Cameroon; Yvon Omnes, to France, in October 1985, reporting to France on The Anglophone Problem in Cameroon in 1985, especially the educational and legal systems; the same educational and legal systems that are protesting via strike action today.

In the letter, the ambassador mentions several events that happened back then in 1985, like:
-Active strikes which took place in the Educational facilities in Southern Cameroon
-The arrest of traditional ruler in Widikum/activist on The Anglophone marginalization; Gorgi Dimka.
-Statement by Minister of territorial administration warning the people in Bamenda that "public order of the state would be maintained by all means possible"
-The fact that as far back as 1979-1981, movements had arisen in Southern Cameroon calling for a return to federation
-The Anglophone Problem back then comprised of several factors;

  • the educational system,
  • the poor economy in the South and North West, due to poor transportation and infrastructure
  • the few industries in the South West and North West employed mostly francophones
  • the resources from petroleum were used to develop other regions, not the South and North West
  • the dominance of the french judiciary system in Anglophone zones
  • the dominance of the french educational system in big higher educational institutes like ENAM, which leaves anglophones with no choice but to study in less prestigious institutes, and occupy positions in the lower echelons of the administrative ladder in Cameroon
His proposed solution to the crisis was dialogue.
That was in 1985, and it is all happening again, in even larger scale.
